US should lead on climate change, say scientists

British expatriates living in warmer countries may be enjoying record temperatures, but unless the US leads on climate change not enough will be done, say scientists.

In an open letter to the US administration, 20 leading scientists have asked President Obama to take the lead.

The president should "exercise maximum personal leadership" in closing the gap between what the US says it can do and what scientists say they need done.

Plans to curb CO2 emissions to 450 parts per million are "inadequate to sustain the integrity of global climate and to hold the risk of ruinous climatic change to an acceptably low level", the experts say.

The president has declared his support for climate change initiatives and stated that by ending the US addiction to foreign oil, the country could even create millions of jobs.

According to research by Alliance and Leicester International, the main reason Britons move abroad is because of the UK's high cost of living.
